First Steps on the Journey
at Home with Children Aged 3--6

The Waldorf kindergarten is based on the healthy home—our work through Christopherus firmly asserts that the home is the best place for the young child to be (circumstances permitting). This guide will help every parent create the healthy forms and rhythms to support the growth of the young child from 3 through 6 in the home.
First Steps on the Journey is full of practical and specific advice for how to proceed. You will find guidance on how to choose toys and books; how to paint and draw; how to tell stories and how to work in the kitchen with your child. And much, much more. There are a number of sample schedules to help you move through each day as well as through the cycle of the seasons with your child and to learn to enhance this very special stage of development by not rushing him—or allowing him to be rushed by others.
This book, twice as long as the old Christopherus kindergarten book it replaces, is filled with the riches of Waldorf early years pedagogy as it can find expression in the home. There are sections on discipline, play, child development, bedtimes and so much more. Included are a number of short stories for very young children for you to use and plentiful advice on how to choose and work with stories as your child gets older.
Together with Joyful Movement and The Journey Begins at Home, these three volumes comprise a full and complete path for living with one’s young child from age 3 to about 7, when she begins first grade.
